There Is Never A Good Time To Start
“I’ll start as soon as I finish this big project at work.”
“I need to get in shape before I start.”
“I’m doing this detox and then I’ll start.”
“We are going on vacation, so I’ll start after that.”
The list goes on and on. These are the reasons why people never find a perfect time to start a training program, a workout routine, a lifestyle change, or a movement practice. The funny thing is that not only will there never be a perfect time but I actually think that starting something new when you don’t want to or at a stressful time is the best time. Once you are in your routine, once you have created a new habit of working out each day or eating cleaner, it’s not like life is going to be perfect. You’ll always have to battle all those excuses not to workout or eat whole and less processed foods. It doesn’t get easier, you just learn how to make things a little better and you learn how to manage tough situations and make the best of them. You learn that, when you are out at happy hour and used to have 3 or 4 drinks and a bunch of bar food, you now have a couple of drinks and you learned to pack some fruits and veggies before you leave for the office in the morning, so you have a healthy snack before you head to happy hour. This way you aren’t starving when you get there and you make better food choices.
So, there really is no perfect time to start. You have to create your moment to start. If you wait for it… it will never happen. It doesn't take much. You don’t have to go out and get new shoes. You don’t have to read that new book on the best fad diet. All you have to do is make a decision. Once you do, you should expect that it won’t be perfect, it won’t be easy, and there will be resistance, but that’s totally normal. Everyone goes through this rough patch. The key is to get people around you that can support you, people that have done it, and maybe even people who are doing the same thing.
